Ruhun Duymaz: Season 1, Episode 1 Recap – Burcu Özberk & Şükrü Özyıldız, A Match Made In Heaven

by

As soon as I got the news that Burcu Özberk & Şükrü Özyıldız would be leads in a rom-com called “Ruhun Duymaz” written by Ayşe Üner Kutlu, I was INSTANTLY HOOKED. (Disclaimer: Deniz Gürlek & Dilek Iyigün also are writing this show alongside Ayşe). I watched multiple dizis from Burcu & also tuned in to Ayşe’s “Sen Çal Kapımı” meaning this pair was a match made in heaven for me. Not knowing Şükrü yet and his acting, I was excited to see what he had to bring to the table. And let me just say, ALL DELIVERED! I will be discussing my thoughts on each episode of Ruhun Duymaz as they come out, starting with the first episode. It undoubtedly left its mark!

MY THOUGHTS:

WOW. That premiere was amazing, let’s dissect it. So starting right away we get to see our leads Onur & Ece meet immediately. They both are peeved at each other right off the bat which, of course, is a staple for enemies to lovers. I think one of my favorite parts of their meeting is the fact that she punches him in the face on accident. I laughed out loud when that happened to be honest.

The first half moves pretty fast by showing us the dynamics of all the characters and although it may seem too fast for some, I think it worked amazingly considering the plot revolves around a thief and a spy. I felt like I was on the tip of my toes throughout the whole episode!

Almost immediately, we meet Onur’s team, and we meet Hilal’s family. Chef kisses to the casting director because I enjoyed everyone! We know side characters getting too much screen time is always a negative, but these characters had small scenes that allowed me to enjoy them all.

Neyse, I liked the fact Hilal knows about the smuggling because it adds to her character, I enjoyed watching her, and the cheerfulness she exudes makes you want to root for her even though she and her brother harbor a criminalizing secret.

For an episode that was 2 hours long, it felt like the time went right by. Ece & Onur’s bickering and her constant use of the word “enişte” was so much fun to watch, Burcu truly nails it on the mark with comedy scenes. Having not watched Şükrü’s acting yet, he is great at comedy! (Also, for Onur already showing his dislike for Ece, he sure smiled at a lot of things revolving around her…)

What surprised me was how open Onur was to the fact that he was lowkey into Ece. The stares, the compliments (even if he was “joking”), the teasing, it is all there! If you ask me, Onur will fall first for Ece and also fall harder for her.

One scene that I particularly liked was Hilal dancing with Onur and Ece dancing with Civan. It’s established already that Onur is jealous, I mean, his looks say it all. So seeing him keep his eyes on her while they dance and Civan putting out obvious flirts was entertaining to watch.

Onur’s team was funny to watch and I especially liked Ayla. I’m sure in the later episodes we will dive more into these characters and their personalities but since it is only episode 1, we don’t know much about them yet. I hope to discuss my feelings on them more when we get to know them, but it's apparent that whatever Onur says rules.

Another bond I already see forming is Ece & Elif. We see Elif’s mother, Handan, shun her away when she comes down for dinner with the family. Ece follows after her with food and they laugh and joke together. I can’t wait to see how their bond grows and I love how Ece can already relate to her due to the fact she lost her parents young. I am so excited to dive into Ece’s past and find out why she became a thief.

It wouldn’t be a show written by Ayşe if there wasn’t a kiss scene at the end of it! I know a lot of people aren’t particularly a fan of this type of trope but I usually enjoy it if the circumstances fit. So when I saw in the fragman that Ece & Onur would be fitting this trope, I was surprised. How could they fit in a first kiss for them when no circumstance prompts it? Well at the end of the episode, Onur sees Ece attempting to steal and a chase ensues into the forest. They fight for a bit then Onur pins Ece to the ground. And what does he do? HE KISSES HER! Not even accidentally, he recognized her, leaned in, kissed her, leaned out, and looked surprised. I liked this scene a lot more than I thought I would because he knew what he was doing and knew who she was yet still kissed her. I am excited to see how they will play this off in the next episode. I feel like throughout this episode they could recognize the attraction they have for each other, maybe that is why they both gave in to the kiss. This premiere episode had a different feel than the usual ones I have watched, it felt like I dived right into the action instead of beginning the action.

When thinking about things that I may have disliked, I genuinely can’t think of anything. I may even say this is one of the best premiere episodes I have watched for a dizi, especially a rom-com. I am excited to see where Ece & Onur go moving forward, especially seeing that in the fragman Ece is now helping them so Onur doesn’t take her to jail (by the way, I love how Ece just attacks him, she is so iconic!). Şükrü also mentioned in an interview that the characters know each other from the past, so I wonder what that entails. My prediction: they were both orphans so maybe they were in the same orphanage, let me know what you think it may be! The angst and the looks have already won me over, I can’t wait for more of Ece & Onur!
