Mucize Doktor - Episode 2 Review

After a thrilling start to the new season, wait for the second episode would have been tough for the viewers. The trailers promised another episode filled with emotion and drama which further raised the stakes. The episode lived up to its expectations and provided us with the same dose of emotional storytelling which has been the trademark of Mucize Doktor. So let’s get straight to it.

Recap:

The episode begins with Ali in his bed having flashbacks to the events from that tragic day at the hospital. He remembers Kivilcim’s words “my baby means the whole world to me”. He is clearly disturbed and feels guilty about his actions that day. Finally, he gets out of his bed and comes to his living room to find the dining table set up for breakfast. Nazli comes in with a bouquet of flowers and welcomes him to the table. She tries to lift Ali’s mood by giving him his favourite toast. However, she is unable to distract Ali from his negative thoughts. She puts on a clown nose to cheer Ali which goes wrong as Ali is scared of clowns. She immediately throws it outside the window only to find out it had hit a woman in her head. Ali can’t control his laughter as the lady goes on a rant outside. Nazli tells him to always smiles like this.

In that moment, Ali comes to the realization that he can't imagine a life without Nazli in it. She is delighted upon hearing this. She constantly tries to instill positive energy in Ali as they head out for the hospital. However, Ali is shocked after seeing the wall chalking in front of his house saying ‘killer doctor’. Nazli tries her best to calm him down.

In the hospital, Adil Hoca makes a tough decision to resign from his post as part of his previous agreement with the board, which cited any of Ali's wrongdoings as his own.

Tanju, on the other hand, is shown to be in a state of grief as he holds Kiviclim’s bracelet. Doruk gets another stellar entrance in the episode. Tanju storms in Adil Hoca’s office and demands his resignation continuously reminding him of Ali’s mistake. Adil Hoca informs him that his resignation letter is on his table. He is relieved to hear this as it has long been his dream to work in his position. Adil tells him not to be harsh on Ali and that he has already suffered a lot. However, Tanju warns him of grave consequences for Ali.

Meanwhile, a patient is brought into the hospital whose condition gets serious and requires an urgent operation. In the briefing room, Ferman Hoca ignores Ali when he raises his hand to answer the questions and tells him to work on previous case files. Ali runs after Ferman and asks him if he is angry with him. Ferman tells him that he is not a person whom he would like to work with. Ali asks about the baby but Ferman tells him to leave this matter.

Then, Nazli asks the lady who brought the gravely-ill patient in to sign the consent form for her husband. They are shocked to hear that she is not his wife. When the wife comes in, she demands answers as Nazli hesitates to avoid any further delay in the patient's operation. She immediately becomes suspicious of her husband as Nazli reveals more details. The wife reveals that the lady is their secretary and how she has been a good employee for them. Suddenly she attacks her, calling names and accusing her of having a relationship with her husband. The assistants bring the situation back to normal after some effort. The wife refuses to sign as a result of her husband cheating on her.

At the right moment, Ali comes into the room and delivers an emotional speech to the lady which convinces her at last. He tells her about his difficulties in the past week. Ali says that he is more worried about disappointing his teacher than facing the repercussion of his mistake. Ferman is moved as he overhears the conversation.

Adil Hoca gets hallucinations of a girl running around the corridors and while following her, he faints. The whole team leaves everything behind to attend to Adil Hoca. After initial scans, they are devastated to find out that he has a brain tumour and his chances of survival are thin. They discuss with a neurosurgeon about the possibility of an operation. Initially, they hide the news from Ali. But when Beliz discovers that Adil hoca has given the power of attorney to Ali, they are left with no choice but to inform Ali.

Ali is shattered when he hears about his beloved Adil Hoca’s condition. They discuss the possibility of operating with Ali. It seems very risky but Ali is adamant about doing it and he convinces Ferman brilliantly. As Adil Hoca becomes conscious, he calls in Ali. When he learns about the severity of his condition, he tells Ali not to perform an operation and takes away the power of attorney. Ali desperately tries to change his mind but fails.

As Ali locks himself in the room to find other solutions, Nazli tries to enter but she is unable to. Doruk tells Ali to leave Adil Hoca’s case. He tells him about the difficulties of caring for a person with a disability. This makes Ali think for a while and then he opens the door saying he will not give up on his teacher. Beliz comes to Ferman’s office and reveals a shocking detail about Adil Hoca’s past. She tells them that he has a daughter and they could get her permission for the operation. Ali is delighted to hear the news. Overnight Ali comes up with a brilliant solution for the operation but he is disappointed to find out that it’s not possible to do it in Turkey.

On one end, the patient who was brought in earlier reconciles with his wife in an emotional way, on the other, time is running out for Adil Hoca.

Ali and Belize rush to the airport to pick up Ferda (Adil Hoca’s Daughter). The whole team is on standby to begin operating but the only thing standing between them and the operation is his daughter’s signature. As soon she arrives, Ferman asks her for a signature. She requests to see her father first. When Adil Hoca’s vital signs start to fall, Ferman asks again for the signature. But to everyone’s surprise, Ferda refuses to sign and says she has to come to say good bye to his dad.

Review:

The episode starts off lightly but builds tempo as it goes along. The storytelling was so emotional, it had me in tears. Seeing Ali in pain is surely the hardest thing to watch in this drama. The audience was again left astounded by Ali’s ability to connect with his patients on a different level. Not only does he give them relief by discussing his problems but also by convincing them, in the end, to never lose hope. Ali's story teaches the audience how to deal with people, even when they are low.

The theme of this episode was mainly centered on the father-son relationship between Ali and Adil Hoca. It showed us, literally, the extent people are willing to go to be able to save their loved ones. It pays great attention to the significance of basic relationships in our lives, often neglected with little effort put in.

Doruk liveliness has added a new layer of energy in the show but the fans would be happy to see his development in this episode. The way he convinces Ali to come out of the room shows he also carries some emotional baggage. This stresses the point that people whom we often smiling have also got pain hidden in their hearts sometimes. Doruk having a headache after left the audience wondering more about his past trauma.

The scene from the orphanage which involved letting a pigeon go or not also carried a very strong message. It tells us that no matter how much we love someone we should always be willing to let them make their own choices. Instead of influencing their decisions with our thoughts.

Adil Hoca was portrayed as the nucleus of the hospital since the beginning. He was the main character in the storyline to which every other character was connected somehow. Seeing everyone cry for him just shows his value in their hearts. It implies that sometimes the central figure in our lives is very crucial for our happiness.

The episode ends at a cliff hanger leaving the audience both confused and anxious about Ferda’s response.

Will Adil Hoca’s life be saved?
