Mucize Doktor - Episode 1 review

The highest-rated drama of the last season ‘Mucize Doktor’ returns for a highly anticipated season 2. The show takes on a very different subject and features the story of Doctor Ali Vefa, a doctor with autism. It goes on to show the many challenges he faces at work and in his day-to-day life. The show presents a protagonist whom no one is able to understand easily. Despite some of the struggles he faces being a person with autism, Ali yearns to be treated no different from his peers. However, the world surrounding him is rather ignorant in dealing with someone like him.

As well as the intricate storyline and ever-changing scenarios, the show tried to deliver many powerful messages to its viewers. It promoted the idea of accepting someone with its flaws and strengths. Even though Ali’s social skills are poor, the traumas he faced in his past have allowed him to connect with his patients on an emotional level. An interesting story coupled with some brilliant performances from the lead actors made the drama a super hit.

The pandemic forced an early ending of season 1 which left the audience disappointed but they were delighted to hear that the show will have another season. In an interview on social media, the lead couple Ali Vefa (Taner Ölmez) and Nazli (Sinem Ünsal) revealed that the show has some great episodes lined up for season 2. They further added that they have put a lot of hard work in the new episodes and the audience will surely enjoy the new season. They did live up to their claim as the first episode of season 2 was just on a whole different level when it premiered on 17th September. So let’s dive into the episode.

Synopsis:

The new episode catches the attention of viewer’s right from the start as Ali is shown in a courtroom being trialled for the alleged murder of his patient. Then, the show flashes back to 15 days prior, breaking down what actually happened and setting the tone for the rest of the thrilling episode. Ali and Nazli are shown to be enjoying their time together. However, as someone with autism, Ali has difficulties dealing with things that others consider "normal." Therefore, when he tells Nazli to close his eyes while playing a small game, he tries to kiss her but is unable to. He gets annoyed and runs inside the hospital where he asks Ferman and Adil Hoca about this topic, a question they both find difficult to answer.   Unable to find an answer, Ali goes to Kivilcim who is shown pregnant with her child. Kivilcim tells Ali that her daughter will hug him one day and they would make great friends to which Ali hesitates to agree.

Suddenly two patients are brought in the hospital; one seriously injured is taken to the surgery room while the other is moved to a room after initial checks. The conscious one claims to be a friend of the other. Ali is called in to support Nazli on the second patient. As he fails to find her, Ali goes to see the operation where he makes a startling discovery. He tells Ferman and Tanju that the injuries suggest the patient was kept in a car’s trunk. Regaining consciousness for a little while, the patient confirms the other patient did indeed try to murder him. Upon hearing this, Ferman is worried about Nazli and tells Ali that she is with an alleged murderer.

Ali rushes to see Nazli, while the patient convinces Nazli to let him see his ‘friend’. On their way, the psychopathic patient knocks Nazli unconscious and hides her in an empty room. At this point, security had already been alerted, but the patient manages to slip through their fingers and ends up in Kivilcim’s office in an attempt to find refuge. He takes Kivilcim hostage and uses her to get out of the hospital. Due to security bring amped up across the hospital, he only manages to enter the boiler room. From that point onwards, the tempo of the episode really goes up. While an explosion in the boiler room rocks the hospital, Ali in his search of Nazli finds Kivilcim and the murderer both seriously injured. At the right moment, Doruk comes for the rescue and they both manage to keep them alive and shift them to the operating room.

Nazli’s sharp mindedness saves her and she meets up with Ali when he has lost all hope of finding her. Happy to be reunited, Ali hugs and kisses Nazli. They are both called to the surgery rooms where Ferman makes the decision to save the mother instead of the baby. However, he has to leave for a critical patient brought in the emergency department. He instructs Ali to carry out the abortion but clouded by his trauma of the past, Ali makes a crucial decision of saving the baby instead. Tanju reveals that the mother is Kivilcim and tries to save her but all his efforts are in vain.   Despite having their differences in the past, everyone grieves the loss of Kivilcim.

Tanju in a state of grief due to the loss of his closest friend blames Ali for her death. The episode returns to where it started, back in the courtroom. Ali is found to be guilty but the final verdict is postponed for another 3 weeks. Outside the courtroom, Ali apologizes to Ferman as he too receives a pay cut as a result of Ali’s mistake. Ferman tells Ali how he has passed every hurdle to being called one of them. But now he has to take responsibility for his actions as he is on his own.

Review:

It was a terrific start to the 2nd season of a highly popular show. As the director kept the audience to their edge of the seats with some brilliantly filmed scenes full of action emotion and drama. The show definitely started on a much higher note, compared to the end of season 1. The audience will be disappointed though as the characters of Damla and Kivilcim will no longer feature in the show. The director showed how Kivilcim’s character changed for good but it was very short-lived and her exit from the show literally made everyone cry.

The show also portrayed how a tragic event can alter someone’s way of life. As we saw, after the events of the episode, Ali was able to overcome his fear of touching someone after reuniting with Nazli. It shows how our fear of losing someone can sometimes bring out the best version of ourselves. Developments in the lives of supporting characters have all made the audience more desperate for the next episode. Some people might say that a drama which had a much slower pace would have such a fast-paced start to a new season. However, this only makes things more exciting in my opinion as we get to see some brilliant performances and delve deeper into the lives of our characters. The addition of Doruk (the new assistant) to the cast comes as a breath of fresh air as it adds more energy and dynamism to the drama. With the trailers of the next episode out it promises to be another chart-topper as the intensity of the drama increases.

The show announced its return with a thriller episode and storyline worth the wait. Keeping this in mind, it promises to be an exciting watch this drama season.
